Romance In Chester This Valentine’s Day

With Chester being deemed as the original ‘City of Love’, and the Valentines weekend beginning, we thought we would share a few of the most romantic places to visit during your trip to Chester.

1.The Wishing Steps – Forming part of the famous Chester Walls, these steps are the home of a Roman legend. It is said that if you run up and down the steps whilst holding your breath, then all of your wishes will come true! Perhaps this is the perfect place to wish for true love.

2.Grosvenor Park – With its medieval arches and beautiful gardens, the Grosvenor Park is certainly a perfect place for a leisurely romantic stroll. However, it is also the home of the Billy Hobby’s Well. Now covered with a stone Victorian cap, the story goes that if a fair maiden is to place their right leg in the well and wish for true love, then true love will find them!

3.Northgate Lock and Chester Canal – As the canal flows through the city of Chester, you are now more likely to spot a canal boat that the previous industrial packet boats from years gone by, as you take a walk along the banks with your loved one.

4.The Peppergate – This gate is home to Chester’s own Romeo & Juliet story. 20 years before Shakespeare penned his version, the Mayor of Chester’s daughter fell in love with a penniless suitor. Her father disapproved, wanting her to marry a wealthy and older man. The two young lovers met outside the gate and rode off together to ‘Wild Wales’ where they could not be found. The Mayor was so angry that he ordered the gate to be closed every night. This gate is now a very popular photo opportunity for young couples visiting Chester.

5.The Chester Rows – Even though these shops are a well know tourist attraction, they still retain their unique historic character. They are also home to one of the highest concentrations of jewellery stores in the country, some of which have been open since the 1700s! Perhaps this weekend is the time to look for engagement rings?

6.The Queen’s Park Suspension Bridge – Opened officially in 1923, this bridge offers amazing views along the River Dee and across into the city of Chester. It has now become tradition to bring a padlock with your names on, attach it to the bridge and then throw the key into the river, to symbolise eternal love. The perfect setting for a proposal, or just a loving kiss.

7.Eastgate Clock – One of the most popular tourist spots in Chester, and the second most photographed clock in the world! It was built in honour of Queen Victoria to celebrate her 60th year on the throne. A beautiful and iconic location to share a moment with your loved one.

8.Chester Bandstand – Built in 1913, the Bandstand on the banks of the River Dee was typically home to musicians who would entertain couples who were taking a stroll along the Groves. In the summer months, the Bandstand is still home to live music, however in the winter it is the perfect location for spending time with your other half, and a beautiful backdrop for a photo.

9.Chester Zoo – The Zoo, recently deemed the best in the UK and seventh best in the world on Tripadvisor, is a perfect day out for couples. Stroll around the beautiful tropical gardens, and gaze at the amazing animals in residence

10.Cheshire Oaks – Okay, so our final place is not necessarily the most romantic, but it is a great place to spend your Valentines weekend. Cover up forgetting to buy a gift with a surprise shopping spree to the Designer Outlet. Just a ten minute drive from Chester, the outdoor shopping outlet boasts hundreds of designer stores and restaurants. It is the perfect way to treat your loved one.

So, whether you live in Chester, or are just visiting for a weekend away this Valentines, bring out the romance in you and try out some of these places.
