The Importance of Self-Care During Winter

By Anna Beckett, Senior Spa Therapist at Rowton Hall Hotel & Spa

As the days grow shorter and the air turns crisp, our bodies and minds naturally begin to slow down. Winter is a season that calls for gentleness – a time to nourish, restore, and create warmth from within. Yet for many of us, it becomes one of the busiest times of the year. Between festive gatherings, darker days, and the rush of everyday life, self-care often slips quietly to the bottom of the list.

As a spa therapist, I often remind guests that winter self-care isn’t a luxury – it’s a necessity. It’s how we maintain balance, immunity, and emotional wellbeing through the coldest, quietest months of the year.

Listen to Your Body’s Rhythms

In nature, winter is a season of rest and renewal. Trees conserve their energy; animals hibernate. It’s a gentle reminder that we too are part of this rhythm. When the temperature drops, our bodies work harder to stay warm, and our skin becomes more vulnerable to dryness and sensitivity.

Simple rituals, like taking a little longer with your skincare routine or treating yourself to a warm bath before bed can make a profound difference. Choose nourishing oils, rich moisturisers, and calming scents such as lavender, sandalwood, or chamomile to support your body’s natural restoration process.

The Power of Touch and Stillness

here’s something deeply healing about human touch, especially during the colder months when we crave warmth and connection. Massage therapy doesn’t just ease muscle tension; it helps stimulate circulation, boosts the immune system, and releases endorphins that combat the winter blues.

Even a single spa visit can help you feel rebalanced: body, mind, and spirit. But self-care doesn’t always need to mean a full day away. You can bring those same moments of stillness into your home: practise mindful breathing, stretch gently in the morning light, or simply take five quiet minutes with a cup of herbal tea.

Nourish from the Inside Out

Our skin often reflects how well we’re nourishing ourselves. During winter, staying hydrated and eating warming, nutrient-rich foods like soups, root vegetables, and herbal teas can help maintain your glow from the inside out.

At the spa, we see how hydration rituals, whether through body wraps, scrubs, or deeply moisturising facials, help replenish what the season takes away. Think of it as giving your body a much-needed drink of water, both inside and out.

Create Your Winter Wellness Routine

True self-care is consistency. Setting small, meaningful rituals can transform how you move through the season: a weekly soak, an evening gratitude moment, or a monthly visit to the spa to unwind and reset.
Your body will thank you, your mind will soften, and you’ll move into spring feeling refreshed rather than depleted.

This winter, give yourself permission to slow down.
Take that deep breath. Schedule that treatment. Wrap yourself in warmth and kindness: because when you care for yourself first, you’re better able to give your best to others.
